  • Civil engineering is the application of physical and scientific principles for solving the problems of society, and its history is intricately linked to advances in understanding of physics and mathematics throughout history. Because civil engineering is a wide-ranging profession, including several specialized sub-disciplines, its history is linked to knowledge of structures, materials science, geography, geology, soils, hydrolog y, environment, mechani and other fields.

  • Civil engineering is the second oldest branch after military engineering. In past military engineering term used for construction work of military purpose but as need of shelter construction for common people arrives, they coined a new term called as Civil Engineering that means construction for civilians (civilized people)

In 1750 when the Military Engineer's started handling the work of civil infrastructure the term Civil engineering was coined. Also, it is said that as this branch of engineering deals with the construction and management of Civil infrastructures like buildings, dams, bridges, etc it is called Civil Engineering.

  • To talk about Civil Engineer, first we should know how ENGINEER has came. Because, Civil Engineering is the oldest branch of engineering after military engineering.
The intended meaning of the word ENGINEER is not the same as when it has originated. The word ENGINE is derived from Latin word “ingeniare”.
The word engineer was initially used in the context of warfare, dating back to 1325 when engine’er (literally, one who operates an engine) referred to "a constructor of military engines". In this context, "engine" referred to a military machine, i. e., a mechanical contraption used in war (for example, a catapult).
Until late 18th century, there is no disparity between military and civil engineering. Both are just ENGINEERS. The first self-proclaimed civil engineer was John Smeaton, who constructed the Eddystone Lighthouse.

  • Well already the question has been answered. I will add a little historic interpretation. Earlier there was only one branch of engineering and that was military engineering. The word engineer came into being as a part of military constructions sometime in 1325. Later when this particular knowledge was used in civilian aspects like building bridges , roads etc.. the term civil engineer was coined.

  • Civil Engineering is named as it is because it is a part of Science which deals with the comfort acessories required by the civilians with respect to their basic needs of shelter, transportation, work place and other.

  • BECAUSE THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS BRANCH IS THE REHABILITATION OF CIVILIANS
