A stored procedure is a group of one or more database statements stored in the database's data dictionary and called from either a remote program, another stored procedure, or the command line.

In simple terms.. We use queries to get information from a database. And sometimes we need to perform various processes over those queries like looping them, having multiple queries, data from different tables based on some criteria, sorting or searching a record etc. Now if you consolidate or gather all those queries or database related processes (queries) into one file, this will give you a stored procedure.

Java code invoked within the database is a stored procedure (or procedure). Java stored procedures are database side JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) routines.
