I am a bibliophile since a long time. And this has been a confusion since long time.
See, self-help books and novels have different purposes and are written for different audiences. You need to understand that novels are fictional stories that are written with the purpose of entertainment however, self-help books are written to help people tackle the personal issues that they might be dealing with. So every book has a different purpose to serve therefore in my opinion both are equally important. So, if you think you lack self-confidence and has depression and stuff so you should read self-help books but novels are equally important for they teaches you some of the most important life lessons without directly addressing them.
I think that it every book has something new to tell if we really understand the book. For a book to be more benficial or effective it does not has to have a label of Self-help category. It depends on us what we understand and interpret the books we read. Reading fiction can also teach us many lessons through the actions of the characters. If you read book just for fun, then, you won't understand the gist but if you read any book of any genre and read it without any prejudices in your mind you will definately feel the difference in understanding the world
According to me te book you readd is a choice of your own when we have an opportunity to read self helpbook and when we actually require it then it will be helpful , but then the novels can act as elf help books too in many ways like it can have hidden meaning to change your life
