Let’s talk a bit about the Indians (Not Native Americans) for whom biscuits and chocolates became cookies and candies - The tribe which always carries a mineral water bottle and a unique accent wherever they go!

Yes! We are talking about NRIs (The full form is not needed as more people know the full form of NRI than RBI). An ordinary ‘I’ who becomes an ‘NRI’.

So many talks have been done on the topic and the tribe has been criticized a lot by another tribe known as a want to be Deshbhakt (patriotic) on social media. In this article we are going to see some statistical figures and facts about NRIs.

Starting with statistics regarding the population of NRIs and their distribution all around the globe. In total, there are about 29.22 Million Indians staying outside of India which is more than the total population of many countries around the world.

For the longest time NRIs have been a symbol of Brain Drain. NRIs study in India and work outside. They learn here and serve to the foreign land.

Firstly, the question is, Does studying in Indian Education system really lead to learning?

It is extremely necessary to go out and expose yourself to the world, One cannot put enough emphasis on how much important it is to explore, know, learn, observe and understand how the world is moving and what others are doing by stopping to be in shallow waters. Let’s remember a few great legends who were and are at times NRIs, for instance, Kalpana Chawla, Surender Pillai and even Gandhiji! Yes, our own Bapu -Ghandiji was once an NRI. What’s more?

The pilot project of freedom fight he executed in Africa was the seed of India’s Freedom Movement. There are a few more honorable mentions. Founder and creator of Hotmail (Hotmail was World’s No.1 web based email program) is Sabeer Bhatia, an Indian. Co-founder of Sun Microsystems is an Indian - Vinod Khosla. Creator of Pentium chip (needs no introduction as 90% of the today’s computers run on it) is also an Indian - Vinod Dahm. Narinder Singh Kapany a Punjab-born genius is known for his contribution to the field of fibre optics. Har Gobind Khorana – Indo-American biochemist Born in Raipur, Punjab bagged a Nobel Prize in the year 1968 for Physiology or Medicine for cracking the genetic code along with Robert Holley and Marshall Nirenberg.

Recently, South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley, 44, has been chosen to serve as US President Elect Donald Trump’s US Ambassador for United Nations. An Indian leader from Sikh community - Sajjan got appointed as a defense minister of Canada.

These NRIs have carried the name of the Nation to the sky.

They are not only doing exceptionally good in their respective fields but also supporting Indian economy. Last year, NRIs have sent $72 Billion back to India only in foreign exchange. (Source : https://www.quora.com/In-what-ways-are-the-Non-Resident-Indians-contributing-to-India)

A report by wealth consultancy Wealthinsight stated that, the number of NRIs with millionaire status last year was 2.36 lac, with an average wealth of over $3.83 million.

The total NRI population was pegged at around 28 million. The US accounted for the largest proportion of NRI millionaires with 133,564 or 56.5 percent share, followed by the UK with a 0.7 percent share. Other countries with a significant number of NRI millionaires include the UAE, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan.

The total wealth of NRI millionaires was estimated at some $915 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach $1.4 trillion by 2019.$72.17 billion NRI remittance is most often used for investments in stocks, term deposits, land and property.

The NRIs are returning back with lots of knowledge, potential and passion to drive change. These returned NRIs have founded revolutionary startups like Flipcart, SnapDeal, UrbenLadder, Zomato and Inmobi working in it as CEOs, COOs, CTOs and CPOs.

NRIs around the world have made difference in development of India and in the country of their residence as well.

It is not Brain Drain but Brain Gain. These NRIs whereever they go they take their roots, India with them. Indian culture, traditions, movies, food is renowned all over the world is because of this clan.

They do not just stay in a foreign land but they are contributing magnificently to the society, the Nation in which they are residing and have gained a high respect for the Indians and India. The world is like, Hey! These Indians are pretty smart and their food is delicious (Except some of the movies).

Every time an NRI achieves something it is a plus one point for India too! They are really helping India becoming more global. Let’s break the stereotype of Brain Drain and feel proud on the tribe of global Indians.
