Heart rate measurement indicates the soundness of the human cardiovascular system. This project demonstrates a technique to measure the heart rate by sensing the change in blood volume in a finger artery while the heart is pumping the blood. Heart rate can be measured either by the ECG waveform or by the Pulse method (Blood flow into the finger). The "Pulse" Method is simple and convenient . Blood flown during "Systolic Stroke" of the heart into the radial artery of the arm is sensed photo electrically. To count the heart rate, here we use a small light source on one side of a finger and observe the change in light intensity. The blood flow causes variation in light intensity reaching the photodiode, which results in change in signal strength due to change in resistance of photodiode. Which is later on displayed on the 7 segment display. Microcontroller used in this project is PIC16F72.
The presence of a Doctor is most essential for the patient care. But the Doctor may have several other patients to take care of at different places. Hence the Doctor cannot monitor health statistics of all the patients at the same time. The "Intelligent Stretcher" or "GSM Based Electronic Stretcher" is a medium to remote investigate the current patient situation at any given time done with the help of various sensors integrated together. With the help of GSM based technology, we can transmit the important and critical health parameters to Doctor's cellphone whenever needed and can create an alarm in the time of emergency!
