Airport BASH Management / Aircraft Bird Strike Prevention training can be imparted by an individual trainer or a Company / Institution. The general belief is that contracting a Company / Institution to do this job is better than an individual trainer because Company or Institution is more authentic, accountable and trust-worthy in delivering the services. But I find an individual trainer can perform this much better because of his /her passion, vision and mission synergized to deliver superior effect on the services.

Whether belonging to a Company / Institution or by himself or herself, the trainer should have the following qualifications and training the following qualities:

A trainer should have a doctorate degree in Ornithology or Wildlife Management or Biology. This will make sure that the trainer has vast knowledge on management of wildlife and habitat. Without enough knowledge on the subject he / she may not be able to answer the tricky questions put forward by the trainees, cutting a sorry figure not able to satisfy the trainees. Customer (trainee) satisfaction is a prime subject in any training program, especially when airport employees, already knowing something about the subject, looks for more knowledge. Just repeating what other experts have said previously delivers only bookish knowledge. Hence impressing trainees with current and advanced knowledge is also important.
Experience, that too problem-solving experience, in the field and airport is a must which means the trainer must have working experience at large civil airports (desirably international airports) and busy military airfields to have acquired diverse experience. In many cases military aircraft operate from civil airports or civil aircraft operate from military aerodromes. Hence experience of BASH management at civil and military aerodromes combined gives a better edge to the trainer which clearly varies because of the type of aircraft flown, the altitude and speed at which they fly and the difference in the way pilot can respond to a bird / animal collision with aircraft.
Real expertise matters much in BASH management because every time a collision occurs due to different contributory factors and the catastrophe presents in varied ways. Imagining all the risks before they appear, reacting to “near misses” and removing the threats before they blossom in to a real case of air accident are the tasks of a BASH Management expert. This comes with actual long-standing research experience on using and evaluation of bird control devices and systems at several aerodromes where problems and problem species vary because of geographical locations, weather patterns especially atmospheric temperatures and precipitation levels and presence of different plants and animals and their density and above all the population density of humans and their culture.
A thorough trainer imparts training not just for airport compliance with rules and regulations of ICAO or National Aviation Regulator but for hundred percent aviation safety from the angle of bird and animal menace to aircraft flight safety. The training should aim at equipping and helping the trainees to reduce bird and animal presence in and around aerodrome, their concentrations, their attractions, number of bird hit incidents especially damage-causing accidents and air crashes and above all reducing Bird Strike Rate (BSR) at the airport in question.
A smart trainer instils confidence in trainees to equip them with necessary knowledge and skills to carry out BASH Management at their airports independently with little or no help from seniors. Skilling the trainees from the existing level of their knowledge and expertise to the higher desired levels is the most desirable outcome of a training program.
Training only for a certificate or to get a promotion in job or acquire a better job is the worst scenario where training material are just dumped somewhere and never used on the job.
The real merit of a good training program can be seen within three months of receiving the training from the way the trained employees behave and react to incidents and accidents and how they succeed in preventing incidents and accidents. A good training program will transform the trained employees to more sincere, responsible, accountable, productive, and trust-worthy individuals with more belongingness to work and work-place.
