if energy can neither be created nor destroyed how was it initially created

I am in bewilderment with the first law of thermodynamics. I am not doubting its validity but my conscience feels a bit hazy about it.

mass and energy are same (interchangable).....E=mc^2 So during the Big Bang, around 14 billion years ago....mass concentrated got converted into energy and boooom......
