  • The factors that affect the performance of the network are as follows :-
    1. Bandwidth - Used to measure the maximum rate of information that can be transferred in bits/second.
    2. Error rate - The number of corrupted bits expressed as a percentage or fraction of the total bits sent.
    3. Throughput - It is the actual rate of information that is transferred.
    4. Jitter - Variation in packet delay at the receiver end of the information.
    5. Latency - The delay between the sender sending encoded information and the receiver decoding it.
The two types of transmission technologies are :-
    1. Broadcast Network - Broadcast networks have a single communication channel that is shared or used by all the machines on the network. Short messages called packets sent by any machine are received by all the others.
    2. Point-to-point Networks - Point to point networks consists of many connections between individual pairs of machines. To go from the source to the destination a packet on these types of network may have to go through intermediate computers before they reach the desired computer.

  • There are many different ways to measure the performance of a network, as each network is different in nature and design.
The following are often considered important:
Bandwidth: commonly measured in bits/second is the maximum rate that information can be transferred.
Throughput: is the actual rate that information is transferred.
Latency: the delay between the sender and the receiver decoding it, this is mainly a function of the signals travel time.
Jitter: variation in packet delay at the receiver of the information.
Error rate: the number of corrupted bits expressed as a percentage or fraction of the total sent.
