which of these are more efficient?
document.getElementById( "elementId" ); or $( "#elementId" );

Efficient in the sense $( "#elementId" ). But for acheiving this you need to include jquery library files. But for document.getElementById( "elementId" ); you no need any library function. Current browsers will support Js with out including any external libraries.
