As the name suggests this assessment tests the psychology of the candidates appearing in SSB. It is a subjective test which consists of four different tests. It forms the one of the three prominent pillars of SSB interview along with Group Task and Personal Interview. The different tests in chronological order are:
1. Thematic Appreciation Test (TAT): In this segment you’ll be shown 12 pictures, although last one will be blank. The pictures unlike PPDT will have proper outlines and you’ll be able to comprehend key points like the setting of the scene, no. of characters, sex of characters and to an extent even their age. Objective is to write a narration on the pictures in stipulated time of 150 seconds. Again, make it point to narrate a positive story highlighting a social issue. Avoid sarcasm and giving personal opinion.
2. Word Association Test (WAT): This tests your skill to form simple sentences out of random words or even phrases. The idea is to assess your instantaneous reactions when you’re given a random word. For example, Accident. The sentence must not have any negativity and shouldn’t be politically incorrect. I’ll tell you this with a specimen. A good sentence for the aforementioned word can be: “The Delhi Government has constructed innumerable rail over bridges to avoid accidents involving unmanned crossings.” I would suggest using current affairs in your sentences as far as possible.” Also, as there is a paucity of time avoid long sentences.
3. Situation Reaction Test (SRT): It will test your presence of mind and your practical well being by giving typical situations from various walks of life. For e.g. “A house is set on fire”. The time is less and you need to decisive enough to take a quick and robust decision. Let me give you a workable answer for this situation: “firstly avoid getting into the fire engulfed house”, bravery and courage are definite virtues Armed forces are looking for but not practical in this context. “In such situations you need to inform the Fire Brigade as soon as possible, and then you can assist the fire fighters in dousing the fire. Once fire is taken care of you can lend your hand in evacuating the victims and administering first aid or medical care as required.” Idea is to portray yourself as not only a brave but also intelligent and a vigilant citizen.
4. Self Description: This is very important, name is itself self explanatory. Make sure you’re giving your own picture to reader. Avoid being too flowery and also too conservative with yourself. Both create a bad impression. Just write what you are and avoid trying to be someone else. I would suggest practicing this test for at least three times because it is always a difficult thing to write about oneself in such a situation.
Important points for having a good Psychological test:
• Read books, periodicals and news papers regularly, it’ll improve your grammar, spellings and vocabulary.
• Use good pen like Parker for writing the test.
• Make sure your handwriting is legible to reader.
• Practice psychological test before you go for SSB, you need to have a good writing speed to complete the full process.
