Pycnometer is used to determine the specific gravity and water content of soil It looks like horlicks bottle with tapered end Step 1:Measure the empty weight(W1) Step 2:Fill the bottle with 3/4th of soil and weigh it(W2) Step 3:Pour the remaining 1/4th with water and weigh it(W3) Step 4:Remove all and clean it Step 5:Fill empty bottle full of water and weigh it(W4) Specific gravity=(W2-W1)/((W2-W1)-(W3-W4))
