what is transformer? and only work AC Supply . Why?

Transformer is a static device which converts the level of voltage keeping frequency constant. .
Yes  it works on AC only...
because transformer has 2 winding....primary and secondary. The emf induces in secondary winding due to change in flux  linking ...this is possible only in AC...
while working with DC ,there is constant current...and flux follows the path of current...so there is no change in flux linking...
sso transformer can not work on dc
