Manganese steels: difficulties of machining

Why does the machining of manganese steels have similar dificulties to austenitic stainless steels?

  • Because the gamma phase (austenite) hardens with cold work. Therefore, the machining of manganese steels and austenitic stainless steels is difficult in any process. There are no exceptions. But elaborate preheating techniques greatly reduce hardening of austenite in machining processes.
