What is the difference between soft and hard handoff?

Hand over is when UE moves from one cell to another cell. Hard hand over when move from cell to cell but the hand over is going through core not through BSC. soft hand over is when UE moves from one cell to another cell not through core. e.g. from cell to cell within the same site, or from cell to cell within two BSC but through Iur link not through core.
