  • Hard Handoff: whenever call cannot be maintained and latching of mobile station becomes lose with BTS loosing frequency sync. or extremely low power, then handover is done on new frequency channel of existing or new BTS. since frequency channel has to be changed and mobile has single antenna so currently used frequency channel has to be stopped before activating new frequency channel to maintain the call. Hence called first break then make connection.

Soft Handoff: Occurs due to low power or poor signal from one BTS (better we call CDMA BTS), since all BTS uses same frequency in CDMA connection is transferred from one channel to another channel without stoping the current channel because both current and new channels have same frequency, (In CDMA channels are characterized by Codes), hence there is a short time when mobile is connected to both BTS and recieves the signla from which it is getting stronger signal and after then disconnects the previous channel.

  • Soft handoff never disconnects the current call where as hard handoff disconnects the current call and establishes connection with the new base station.
Soft handoff mostly occurs at the times when you are travelling from one place to another place.
    Soft handoff approaches make-before-break policy.
    Hard handoff approaches break-before-make policy.

  • Soft hand of is process in which mobile unit connects to new cell site before leaving the cell site in hard handoff first the mobile unit leaves the cell site and then make new connection

  • Soft Handoff: It means the radio links are added and removed in a way that the MS always keeps at least one radio link to the UTRAN. ... It is basically an inter-frequency handoverSOft Handover:- When mobile ( in Call) switches to a new sector/cell which is on the same frequency then it is called a soft handover.

  • In telecommunication handoff is nothing but,the process of transferring an active call or data session from one cell in a cellular network to another or from one channel in a cell to another.
so there are 4 types of handoff i.e,
    Hard handoff
    Soft handoff
    Softer handoff
    Softer handover
    Hard handover
thus the soft hand hard handoff have simple difference as follow
Hard handoff: It means that all the old radio links in the MS are removed before the new radio links are established. In GSM, it is general. we can say Break before Make. so in this case higher rates of call drops is found.

Soft Handoff: It means the radio links are added and removed in a way that the MS always keeps at least one radio link to the UTRAN. In CDMA this technique is performed. In simple words we can say Make befor Break. To lower the rates of call drops, this technique is used.

  • Hand over is when UE moves from one cell to another cell. Hard hand over when move from cell to cell but the hand over is going through core not through BSC. soft hand over is when UE moves from one cell to another cell not through core. e.g. from cell to cell within the same site, or from cell to cell within two BSC but through Iur link not through core.

  • Soft handoff between the Cells and hard handoff between different sites cells.

  • Hard handoff: Break Before make and Soft handoff:Make before break.

  • Telecommunication is the communication  between employees, employers, contractors, clients and consumers of key element of running a successful business.telecommunication solutions are becoming more effective and affordable.

  • Hi Tanu it ?doesn't matter which service you are talking about as it applies to the registering of phones. The basics of it is when you do a hard handoff it can be rough on the network because the subscriber is just pushed on that tower. In a soft handoff, the cell is allowed to cycle, find that better tower and then be pulled into the tower.

A cell phone being turned on is basically a hard handoff, as it really just appears on the network. While the soft handoff would be when you are driving down the road and two towers are communicating that your phone coverage is going to pass from one of them to the next.
     Hope it helps :)
