Ferritic bolts and nuts cold-hardened are proper to support metallic structures. Explain why or why not.
Consider mechaanical resistance (bolts and nuts) and dynamic loads.
Ferrous and nonferrous metals should be welded in their "annealed" (low-strength) condition when possible. What about "normalized" metals? Explain why.
Observe warping stress and yield strength of metals.
Welding of low thermal conductivity metals (stainless steels and Nickel-base alloys) do not results in a steep temperature gradient that increases the shrinkage in the weld and in the adjacent plate.
Explain why or why not. Consider thermal expansion.
In general, each weld bead will be subjected to the same high quench rate as the first bead of a non-preheated workpiece. Explain why.
Observe interpass temperature.
The weldability of a low-carbon steel casting is comparable to that of a wrought steel of similar composition. Explain why.
Observe microstructures.
Consider austenitic stainless steels 301, 302 and 304. Sensitization can be minimized by making the torch brazing thermal cycle as short as possible. Explain why.
Observe carbide precipitation.
