  • Alternators and generators are two devices which generate electricity. An alternator can be called a type of generator. An alternator is a charging system for cars that produces electricity. Generators are used in the production of large-scale electricity. br /Both alternators and generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. The main difference between them is in regard to what spins and what is fixed. br /1. In an alternator, electricity is produced when a magnetic field spins inside the stator (windings of wire). In a generator, on the other hand, the armature or windings of wire spin inside a fixed magnetic field to generate electricity.br /2.Generators have to be polarized after installation, there is no need for polarization in alternators.br /3.Alternator brushes last longer than those of generators. br /4. An alternator will not charge a dead battery and if you do try to charge it, there is a possibility that it will burn out. A generator, however, can be used for charging a dead battery.br /5. Alternators can fit into a small space, while generators are larger. br /6. Alternators conserve energy by using only the energy that is needed, while generators use all the energy that is produced.

  • Generator is the comon name for the machines wich produces electric power .either it may be ac or dc..ac generators are called as alternators..

  • IN DC POWER GENERATION MACHINE WHICH PRODUCE POOWER IS CALLED GENERATOR IN AC POWER GENERATION MACHINE WHICH PRODUCE POWER IS CALLED ALTERNATOR

  • Generator generates only alternating current whereas an alternator generates all types of electric currents.

  • Generally, both the terms are used for emelectrical power generation/em but of a different type. br /If we talk about the emstrongDC power generation/strong/em, the machine which is producing power is stronggenerator/strong but in the case of strongemAC power generation/em/strong, the machine which is producing power is alternating in nature so the machine producing AC power is called an strongalternator/strong.

  • Alternator's are generally synchronous generators.
