The Himalayan region is characterized by remoteness and inadequate health infrastructure. Lack of access
to professional assistance and care during pregnancy and delivery is a major cause of maternal mortality for
women in the Himalayas. In order to address this issue, Pragya is creating Women’s Care Groups in villages
to render wrap-around support and care to women, from the stage of planning their pregnancy, ANC, right
through the process of delivery and on to PNC, including care of new mothers and newborn, and child care.

Communities in the Himalayas are predominantly subsistence farmers, and typically grow less than their consumption needs; most households suffer chronic food insecurity. Himalayan communities also have very low literacy and health awareness, and understanding of diet requirements is extremely limited. A poor diet from low access to nutritive crops and food inadequacy is a major cause of a high incidence of various nutritional disorders, which can be prevented by inclusion of nutritious crops in the diet. Undernutrition is a well-established risk factor for TB. It is clear that improved population level nutritional status can have significant impact on TB morbidity and mortality. Improved nutrition status in the population helps prevent TB.
