39Never judge a book by its cover, and the Internship by the fancy office or a fancy interview39 The old saying holds more true in current scenario then earlier ever. Coming from a college or university amongst thousands in India, Finding an internship is in itself a tough task, but the tougher challenge is to find it RIGHT. How does a youth do that The different between the perception and reality is stark but only visible to careful eyes. What we should all look at is 1. Is the company offerring internship really looking for some real output from an intern If you really look at any internship ad carefully you would observe either of the following, a. The requirements of an internship like the talents required are vaguely mentioned b. The requirements of work skill and the output required a mentioned clearly. If a is true there are high probability that the company is looking for a cost free labour and the output required is not really required. If b then you can be assured that the company has a high chances of some real work. As a student we must keep in mind that in real worl some cynicism exists. Thus, a company will only want to invest their good time when it expects some output. If the company really does not expect any output from an intern then it would rather not spend valuable management time on you and rather give you non intrusive clerical work. 2. If the selection procedure for the internship is well defined and based on the skills that is required for the job. Thus, if a company says that they are looking for a programmer but only ask typical aptitude questions then you can be sure that they don39t care a damn about your programming skills. If a company takes pain in actually seeing the skill and have a clear cut target in mind, be sure you will atleast learn and do something on the job. 3. Is the company willing to pay for an internship or the work output. Understand in the real world real work is very expensive. As an intern you could do that work well enough to deserve a little benefit. If a company in the right minds gets good work for 10 of the price they will have to bear then they would be glad to do so. Hence, if the company recruting you as an intern says that it is willing to pay a stipend, however small it maybe you can be sure they are expecting some meaningful work from you and thus, your learning on this internship is ensured.
