I am using WordPress for more than 2 years, created one niche site which is not so popular but get more than 10k+ pageviews per month. The website is not a blog it provides services like Question Papers and syllabus to  Nagpur University Students. You can check it Student Revise.

As you can see the website is not a blog so yes you can create a niche website on WordPress CMS.

What about security? Nothing in the world is secure everything like Android Smartphone, Smart Televisions, Websites can get hacked. It's up to you how you make it secure. I use All In One security plugin to secure my website. You can use it too.
