I want to build a home desktop PC for networking

Hi there I have a bare bone desktop PC tower, that I would like to make into a home networking server for movies, music etc.. all for personal use... Can someone pls help in guide me into the right direction on where to get parts and the set-up instructions.. with the correct steps.. Would also like to be able to access my network from anywhere...
