Why this branch of engineering is called 'civil engineering'?

Well already the question has been answered. I will add a little historic interpretation. Earlier there was only one branch of engineering and that was military engineering. The word engineer came into being as a part of military constructions sometime in 1325. Later when this particular knowledge was used in civilian aspects like building bridges , roads etc.. the term civil engineer was coined.
