'How do I find a good job ?' , 'I am searching for a job but can't find it, can you help ?' , question similar to this are something we hear every day. The more we understand and go deep into the recruitment process, understanding needs of 16000+ employers and over 500,000+ assessed job seekers using our portal www.Youth4work.com the more convinced we are that this particular question is wrong .
The right question that every job seeker must ask is “How does the employer find me” . The reality is that employers find it harder to get hold of the right person. Lets gets the fact straight, for a job seeker there are say x jobs to apply on, but for the employers there are hundreds of applicants on one particular job. For a job seeker, an application process generally revolves around submitting their resume or profile (which is same) to hundreds of application systems and job openings, For an employer, their task is to essentially make sense of hundreds of applicants coming in, read resumes (which generally are all in different format) try to make senses and gauge the applicant and then schedule an interview.
Thus, You can be pretty sure that though you hear that finding a job is difficult, the reality is finding a good employee is more difficult these days.
Thus, the right question is not ‘how to find a job ?’ but ‘how does the employer find you for their jobs?’
Lets answer that quintessential question.
How does an Employer find you?
a. What is the employer searching?
b. How do they find me on their search?
What are employers searching –
Let’s take an example, if you are trying to hire a software developer, the skills required are say php and mysql. What info would you need.. for me, I would like to know who are the top php developers having mysql skills, actively searching for jobs in my city, probably pick top 100 guys and connect with them to explain my job and my company, gauge their interest in joining and schedule an interview. I really do not want to post a job on job boards which will get me 1000’s of resumes but to find which guy is having the skills I require and who is the best amongst them from a resume is something that no one could do from just a resume. Every employers wants to have very limited people who they know are good enough for the job and actively searching for a job opening to be able to converse with. Rest they will figure out the real person in an interview or their internal process. To find, screen and schedule the right people for the interview is the herculean task in front of every employers, which probably is more difficult than most can imagine. (think, why do employers actually shell out huge consultancy fees (5-8% of ctc ), to HR consultants who basically schedules an interview. Trust me they are no fools , and a company pays only when they see a much bigger value add, and worth the money they spend on any hr consultant or recruitment agency scheduling interviews for them)
How do they find me –
Well, generally the answer you hear is create an awesome resume, highlight xyz etc. etc. I believe this is wrong, or not the first step in today’s world and technology. Probably 3 years from now, when any employer had very limited resumes to go through they actually spent time to judge you from it, but now, floating resumes to multiple jobs is as easy as a single click of a button, resulting in Inbox flooding with resumes. The task then becomes how does employer view my resume or profile and know I am better than the rest.
Remember, the example above, if you are looking for a software development job, having skills in php and mysql, how do you ensure that the employers views your profile. I do not think having a perfect word file and resume for this job will improve your chances of it being viewed.
